Intro to Algebra 1 Fall Semester

Week 11-12 HW last weeks before winter break!

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time. This is how we get better at math (and everything else). We work at it piece by piece, bit by bit, problem by problem, day by day. Your daily effort will yield great results!

Week 11 HW Dec

Quizzes and Tests Schedule

Week 6 Chp 1 Quiz

Week 7 Chp 2 Quiz

Week 8 - Chp 1-3 Cumulative Test

Week 10 - Chp 5 Quiz (Fractions)

WINTER BREAK - 3 WEEKS

Week 13 Review for Final Exam and possible exponents quiz on chp 4

Week 14 - Final Exam Chp 1-5 (possibly part of chp 6)

Concepts for Intro to Algebra: McD Chp 6.1-6.5: Ratios & Proportions and McD 7.1-7.3 Percents intro

Adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing fractions, including monomials (such as 6a/3a), solving proportions, intro to similar figures. Introduction to percents

Class Summary - we practiced solving proportions and then applying that to similiar figures problems. We also worked on basic percent problems. We need videos for 6.2 and 6.3 as we did not get direct instruction for those this week.

Advanced topics preview- we also explored the advanced topics of multiplying monomials by polynomial, multiplying binomials and even factored binomials using tiles (in algebra we’ll learn methods to do that algebraically)

HW Week 11

Print out this page and cross off each section as you do it. About 50 problems

Videos for percent sections are up as of Thursday noon.

HW Part 1 of 4

STUDENTS— I MOVING THIS test corrections to next TUESDAY 12/12 DURING CLASS because I DID’T HAVE ALL YOUR TESTS IN ORDER TO GRADE AND RECORD THEM SO I COULDN’T GIVE THEM BACK! don’t worry about doing this ->(Correct errors on your Chp 1-3 Quiz….)

Chp 6.3 Using Cross Products to Solve Proportions Re-read pg 280-282. Do pg 283 PP # 20-26 evens

even answers: 20. d =9, 22. w =15, 24. x = 18, 26. t =30

Optional review videos:

  • Intro to solving proportions with cross products Math Antics Proportions video (10 minutes)

  • Word Problems with proportions. How to set up a proportions when reading word problems? Richard from AoPs sets up proportion (equal ratios are called proportions) (Note at minute 6 he “clears” the fraction by multiplying by 2 so he doesn’t have to have a fraction in the numerator.) He calls method 1 finding an equivalent ratio “scaling it up by a factor of _____”

McD 6.5 Similarity and Measurement

  • Read pg 293-294. DO pg. 293-6 Try the check points #1 & 3 (1. 28 mm, 3. 26 2/3 ft or 26 ft 8 inches ), PP# 9, & 12 (a. 63, b) 15.75 ft or 15 ft 9 in)

  • Optional review video (11 minutes) if you need more examples from Organic Chemistry Tutor

Triangle Geometry

  • Watch Triangle classification video by Math Antics Take notes so you remember the material. Write it down, write it in your brain.

  • Pythagorean Theorem: McD 9.3 p. 464 — read and do the investigation & draw conclusions section

Add the following formulas/facts to your IMPS (see McD 10.4 pge 528-229 for more info)

  • Triangle has 180 degrees

  • Acute triangle has 3 acute angles (all less than 90 degrees)

  • right triangle has 1 right angle (one angle exactly 90 degrees)

  • obtuse triangle has 1 obtuse angle (one angle greater than 90 degrees)

  • equilateral triangle has 3 congruent angles 60-60-60 and 3 congruent sides

  • isosceles triangle has at least two congruent sides

  • scalene triangle has no congruent sides

  • Pythagorean Theorem

  • Add these formulas: Circumference of a circle = ∏D, Area of a circle = ∏r^2, Area of a rectangle = b x h or l x w (use a dot for multiply instead of x), Area of a triangle = 1/2 bh, Interest = PRT, Definitions of solids from pg. 535 (prism, cylinder, pyramid and cone, Percent equation a = p% x b (use a dot for multiply instead of x), Percent proportion a/b = p/100

HW Part 2 of 4

Geometry of Triangles

  • Watch this math antics video on the Pythagorean Theorem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqhlG3Vakw8&t=268s

  • Now read pg. 462-3 McD “Student Reference: Triangles and do Checkpoint 1-10 all (we’ll correct the evens in class— please remind me to do that.)

McD 7.1 Percents & Fractions…. Re-read pg. 329-330. Do pg 331-333 GP #3-7 odds, PP 11-17 odds, 25, 27

Optional video: Converting fractions to percents and vice versa Introduction to percent with Richard from AoPs converting fractions into percents and percents into fractions without a calculator

HW Part 3 of 4

McD 7.2 Percents and Proportions INTRODUCTION— we will be doing more of these so don’t panic if this takes a while to sink in.

Read pg 335-336. Then watch the video below. Then DO pg 337-339 PP#9-19 odds, 23 & 25

Watch this required video. Take notes. There are three basic types of percent problems - watch Richard of AoPs review how to solve these three basic problems.

  • What is this percent of that? Example What is 30% of 120?

  • What percent of this is that? What percent is 88 of 33?

  • This is that percent of what number? 42 is 150% of what number?

Highly recommended but not required video that is REALLY good. Dr. Dan video #50 : How to translate the sentence into an equation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYv63oei9Vo (28 minutes)

HW Part 4 of 4

McD 7.3 Percents to Decimals INTRODUCTION— we will be doing more of these so don’t panic if this takes a while to sink in.. Re-read the examples in this section. Do pg. 342-342 # 13, 17, 21, 25, 29

Highly recommended video by Dr. Dan video #51:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50cCWoIKon8 (28 minutes)

Chp 6.3 Using Cross Products to Solve Proportions Do pg 283 PP # 33, 37-41 odds SQUARE 35

Preview: Watch this video on corresponding parts in congruent polygons- 9 minute video on corresponding parts in similar polygons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG7KcNNoe5I )

Correct work, redo missed problems as usual. Highlight problems on your HW sheet which you want to review in class
